The Santa Elena Reserve, located in Monteverde Costa Rica is world famous for it's biodiversity. This unique wonder offers a magical atmosphere of exuberant vegetation and Moisture-laden air and ever changing wildlife sounds. Here you may also enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and Arenal Volcano from a strategically located tower just 8 miles (14k) from the colossus.
The Santa Elena Reserve and the Monteverde Reserve share the same cloud forest In effect, they are like two doors to the same room. Although an expert naturalist or biologist my detect small variations between the two, for most, the major difference is that Santa Elena is much less traversed due to the fact that the road to Monteverde reserve is in better condition and the large tourist buses prefer that route.
The reserve, home to 100 mammal , 200 bird and 2000 plant species in addition to 100 types of reptiles and amphibians plus countless insect species, is ideal for nature hikes, research and volunteer work.
The community of Santa Elena successfully manages the reserve, providing long term sustainability by re-investment of proceeds generated by entrance fees, guided tours souvenir sales and donations. These funds support local high school, ecological and conservation projects, biology, language and tourist industry projects. Students also take part in the development and management of the reserve.
For maximum Enjoyment of this ecological treasure we recommend a guided tour. Tours are 3 hours duration, restricted to 8 persons per guide. All guides are professional naturalists. Tours are available in both English and Spanish.
Tip: For nature lovers . After your guided tour you may walk more on your own for the same price and you may return on our transportation at 1:00 or 4:00 pm.
