Monteverde is internationally recognized as one of the most outstanding ecological sanctuaries in the Americas. The pueblo of Santa Elena at an altitude of 1250 meters ( 4100 feet) and a population of 6500 is your doorway to this fantastic zone. Basing yourself in Santa Elena you have access to a grand diversity of touristic and ecological options.
The famous cloud forest reserves are perched on the continental divide, reaching as high as 1800 meters (5900 feet). The reserves extend down both the Pacific and Caribbean slopes providing unique combinations of climatic and geographic factors generating temperature gradients which change rapidly in short distances. The reserves support six vegetation communities (life zones), 100 mammal, 400 bird and 120 amphibian and reptile species plus 2500 types of plants as well as tens of thousands of insect varieties.
Among the main attractions in Monteverde are the hikes in the Santa Elena and Monteverde Cloud Forests. Best times for the walks are early in the morning (early bird gets the worm.) The public transportation to the reserves departs from our main office in downtown Santa Elena. You should buy tickets for the bus at least one day in advance. Another important activity in Monteverde is the Canopy Tour where you can observe nature while flying from tree to tree on cables crossing mountains and canons. In Monteverde you will find the highest and longest canopy tours due to the strong, tall strangler fig trees found in the cloud forests.
In addition to the cloud forest and the Canopy tours, Monteverde is also famous for its original Night Walks done in secondary forests, horseback riding , hanging bridges, coffee tours, ATV tours and other places to visit such as the Frog Pond, Orchid Garden and Butterfly Garden.
Our office in Monteverde offers the best information on all tours offered in Monteverde. You may also purchase tickets for the buses for the cloud forests, reserve accommodation and tours in Monteverde plus reservations, accommodations, tours and transportation for other locations throughout the country. We also have a souvenir shop, an internet café, a restaurant and the tourist information center. INFO-CENTER CAMINO VERDE
